Spring calls us to awaken at our deepest level
If we observed the nature’s wisdom and like the seed, rested at the core of our being through the winter months, we would be in position to meet the light of spring with renewed sense of purpose, vigour, and vision to live it.
Spring inspires us to examine our sense of self, to look and plan the whole year ahead, to plant the seeds of the new ideas for the future harvests, to determine direction of our life and make clear decisions that will take us to where we want to be.
The vitality of Spring calls for the reassessment of who we are and what we are about, what we stand for and strive for in life. This is the true purpose of a spring detox.
Spring fasting promulgated by many traditions was a way to bring us into the harmony with the vitality of spring. Seemingly small conscious changes we expose ourselves to in spring have far greater gift than just shedding few pounds.
As seen through the eyes of ancient traditions vitality of Spring inspires the opportunity to consciously renew one’s life and get in harmony with what’s so observable in Nature.
The fact that spring wakes up the surge of renewed life, truly embraced by the plants, so obvious in deciduous trees and courting animals is rarely fully, consciously embraced by humans.
Some of us sleep walk through it, not noticing, not participating, missing to consciously connect with spring is missing to consciously connect with life, yet everything in nature is calling upon us to wake up to pay the attention, to ride springs high winds.
Rising of the sap seen in trees, is rising of creative, reproductive, sexual, juices in humans.
The resoluteness to determine the souls purpose in this lifetime, to assert ones being to make crucial, future affecting decisions, is inspired by the movement of spring.
If you are aware of your juices rising, have spring in your step, moving harmoniously through the change the season brings, you feel connected to all that surrounds you.
In accordance to the five elements theory of traditional Chinese medicine, spring manifests itself through the element of Wood. The Liver and Gallbladder organ network, are also manifesting the qualities of the Wood element.
Liver enables harmonious flow of blood to the rest of the body, not unlike the tree moving the nutritious sap. Liver rhythmically holds and releases the blood, the source of nourishment to each and every cell of the body. The nutrients are timely supplied the waste removed. This uninterrupted flow of blood is the sign of harmonious well nourished Liver.
Healthy harmonious Liver manifests as a balanced sense of self, having positive outlook, being confident, committed, decisive, assertive and having good sense of rhythm. Physical manifestation of a well functioning Liver expresses itself through good eyesight, strong sexual performance, strong glossy hair and nails.
Imbalance in Liver and Gall Bladder organ network is seen in negative attitude to life, lack of direction, aggressive anger lead to, arrogant compulsive, impulsive, behaviour as well as dull, dry, brittle hair and nails.
Diminishing eyesight, is an indicator that either Liver blood and energy are deficient, or its flow to the eyes is impeded.
Premature arousal, lack of rhythm, also reflects the imbalance. Individual with disharmony in Liver Gall Bladder organ network holds onto unresolved emotions.
One’s unique creative potential stays temporarily unexpressed, blocked, until the change in life circumstances is self created to bring on the release.
Individuals with strong Liver energy and blood are excellent strategic planners, decision makers: like the trees they become landmarks on the social horizon, know how to spread themselves into the world and create communities of life. They are the leaders who advance societies into more harmonious fearer future. Their nature is in a state of harmonious balance with softer side of liver wood-ease, smoothness and flexibility, which is incompatible with the wood endangering state of rigidity. Think of the nature of a bamboo, upright, flexible unbreakable, and giving itself fully to every aspect of life from buildings to socks. Now that’s a good raw model.
So how are we to harmonise with, and consciously capitalise on life surge afforded to all life by the movement of spring.
First of all one must wake up to the fact that spring is rising.
Relaxed morning walk, with wind in ones hair without the thought in the mind, simply present to all, the air, the birds, the new blades of grass the catkins on the willow; breathe as if you would like to embrace all that is new, fresh and revitalising and breathe out relaxed, as if you have not got a care in the world. Doing so, you will generate mental strength and act in harmony with the energy of spring, thus following the way of nourishing life.
Obviously the spring revolution is green. Nurture your Liver by eating green food, drinking green drinks, indulge in all young and succulent green shoots and sprouts. Incorporate, micro green algae like chlorella and spirulina into your diet, eat nettle soup as if there is no tomorrow. Alfalfa seeds sprout easily as well as buckwheat, radish, onion, clover, and other seeds. They are essential to Liver health. Sprouted seeds are perfect food because they manifest the potential for a new life, important ingredient in renewing one self.
The green food will clean and revitalise the Liver. Fresh dandelion, primrose, chicory, daisy, chickweed as well as tiny young cleaver leaves can be eaten as a wild salad. Later on in April the wild garlic is out, it is excellent in soups and salads. Dandelion root, milk thistle, globe artichokes, chicory leaves, are liver friends, eat them drink them, get to know them well.
Liver nurturing regime should not be seasonal, learn how to take implement liver care throughout a life time.
Mild sour tasting food is tonic to the Liver. While small quantity of sour flavour tones the liver, too much of sour is not good for the tendons. Most sour flavour is tannin by nature, eaten excessively can lead to tendon tightening tare and injury.
Berries like raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, gou-ji berries, especially black currants, the fruit like cherries, apricots and other nourish blood, very important action for staying healthy in general but in particular to Liver health.
Anger an expression of disharmony in the Wood element
And how does one deal with the friend called anger strongly associated with the Liver disharmony? (being liverish is an old expression of that association) Anger is mirroring to us that there is an obstruction to the flow of creativity in our life.
It calls for change and negotiation, revision of our blind habits and outdated beliefs that stand in our way. Anger is always self defeating event. Anger is also sign of disharmony in the rhythm of the blood flow and calls for a rhythm and movement.
Dance yourself through these obstacles, after all it is you who put them there to remind you to reassess where you want to be. Run until your heart sings, and then relax, listen to what the trees, flowers and birds have to say.
Most importantly by cultivating patience we learn when to advance and when to retreat.
Nature speaks to us in pictures, sounds, smells, tastes and touch. Direct cognition is not a myth, we are all intricate cells, interdependent with all life, and all that enables it. Nature is the unique all knowing teacher and the only true healer.
Always remember that thanks to the plants and trees we breathe, get some gratitude into your attitude. Respect is overdue.
