Rođen je u Zagrebu 3. svibnja 1925., a umro 22.8.2010. u Zagrebu.

Književnik i doktor matematičkih znanosti, umirovljeni redoviti sveučilišni profesor i redoviti član HAZU, član Društva hrvatskih književnika, Zagreb i hrvatskog PEN-a, profesor emeritus Sveučilišta u Zagrebu. Na postdoktorskim studijama u Izraelu (1960) i Japanu (1961-1963). Kao profesor gostovao je na sveučilištu Monash u Melbourneu, Australija (1968) i na Ohio State University u SAD (1971). Sudjelovao je na brojnim našim i međunarodnim matematičkim kongresima i simpozijima. Orden rada sa zlatnim vijencem primio 1965. godine. Republičku nagradu Ruđer Bošković primio je 1969, Nagradu grada Zagreba 1981, međunarodnu nagradu ‘Le Prix CIDALC’ 1977, Nagradu RH za životno djelo u području znanosti 2003, te Odličje japanske vlade “Red Svetoga Blaga” 1983. i posebno priznanje za zasluge japanskoga Ministarstva kulture i prosvjete 2004. Iz područja matematike objavio je 40 znanstvenih i oko 250 stručnih i popularnih radova te 17 knjiga.

Na području japanologije i književnosti surađivao je u brojnim našim i stranim časopisima kako književnim tako znanstvenim radovima i popularnim člancima. Autor je tekstova 8 televizijskih filmova o kulturnoj povijesti i umjetnosti Japana, članaka i tekstova u našim, američkim, japanskim, njemačkim i dr. časopisima i održao stotinjak javnih predavanja te objavio 19 knjiga, od kojih su neke doživjele višestruka izdanja, kao npr. Japanska haiku poezija i njen kulturnopovijesni okvir, koja se smatra temeljem hrvatskoga haiku-pjesništva, kao i Antologija hrvatskoga haiku pjesništva, objavljena 1996. godine, koja bilježi haiku u Hrvatskoj od pojavljivanja u šezdesetim godinama pa zamalo do kraja dvadesetoga stoljeća. Održao je više od sto tribina i neumorno gostovao na nebrojenim promocijama i haikususretima te radijskim i tv-emisijama promovirajući japansku kulturu i poeziju haiku. Ocjenjivač na natječajima za haiku, i sam dobitnik brojnih nagrada u svijetu. Neki od naslova: Trenutak/The moment, haiku-nizovi/haiku sequences, 1997; Bijeli cvijet, knjiga haibuna za djecu i starce, 1994; Haibuni - Riječ i slika, 1997, Japan u slici, Zagreb, 2006.

Počasni je predsjednik Društva hrvatskih haiku pjesnika u Zagrebu, počasni član Njemačkog društva haiku-pjesnika te savjetnik World Haiku Association, Japan.

Born in Zagreb on May 3rd, 1925, he died in his Zagreb on August 22nd, 2010. In 1951, he had graduated in Civil Engineering. In 1956, and had become a Dr. Sc. in Mathematics at the University of Zagreb. He had been a full Full Professor at the same university, retired in 1990. For his research, he visited many countries including Japan, Australia, USA, Israel, Russia, etc. He was a professor emeritus at the University of Zagreb. He had been a Full Member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, a Member of the Union of Croatian Writers, the Croatian P.E.N. Club, etc. Honorary President of the Association of Croatian Haiku Poets, honorary member of the German Haiku Association, Advisor of the World Haiku Association.

In the field of mathematics he has published 40 scientific papers and about 250 essays and articles, and held some 50 public lectures about the results of his scientific work, and had published 17 books.

In the field of Japanology and literature he had published 19 books, some of them having been reissued several times, and more than 200 essays and articles in national and international literary journals and magazines. His book Japanska haiku poezija i njen kulturno povijesni okvir (Japanese haiku poetry) is considered to be the key work on which succesful Croatian haiku has been built over the past decades, a ‘bible’ by which many a Croatian poet was introduced to Japanese culture and poetry. His Anthology of Croatian Haiku Poetry presents Croatian haiku from 1960-s to almost the end of the 20th century, being published in 1996. He had spoken at over hundred lectures, promotions and haiku meetings in Croatia and abroad, has written numerous reviews and has been a guest on many radio and TV shows promoting Japan’s haiku poetry and culture. His haiku had been published in numerous periodicals, magazines and anthologies abroad, he had received many awards for his haiku in Japan and elsewhere, and was a judge at haiku competitions in Croatia.

Awards: International Le prix CIDALC 1977; Order of the Sacred Treasure of the Japanese Government 1983; State prize of the Republic of Croatia for Life Work in Science 2003, etc. In 1981, he obtained a six month fellowship from the Japan Foundation. In 2004 he received a special Commendation for merit from the Japanese Ministry of Culture and Education. He has published 40 scientific papers in Mathematical journals in Austria, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, Czechoslowakia, Poland, Portugal, Australia and the USA.
